NHS trusts blamed by bereaved family

Two NHS trusts have defended their actions after being blamed by a West Yorkshire couple for their baby’s death.

The boy, Logan, died aged just three days old, and his parents, Dave Mears and Emma Collins are suing Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for clinical negligence claiming that there were a number of errors in the three days between Logan’s birth and death. They also say that doctors failed to notice that Emma was in a serious condition and that Logan caught the pneumococcal infection from her, which led to his death.

Collins, who spent 33 days in intensive care and was ill both before and after Logan’s birth, is now recovering at home, but along with her partner, she claims that they wanted Logan to stay in hospital for longer because they were concerned about his breathing and that a day later, in the hours before his death, a midwife reassured the couple that Logan was fine.

Mears and Collins are taking action against the two NHS trusts and Oulton Medical Centre because staff at Pontefract General Infirmary, where Logan was born, failed to spot that he was seriously ill, that the community midwife also failed to notice that he was ill and a doctor called on the same day to see to Emma, said she was suffering from a back muscle strain whereas she had the infection as well as severe pneumonia.
