A Gynaecologist who
did not obtain consent from a woman for an
operation which left her unable to have sex has not been
struck off following an investigation
by the General
Medical Council (GMC).
They ruled
that it had been an "exceptional" case that saw
Essex-based Dr June Swinhoe fail in her practice.
Marian Howland, 52, from Epping, had not been
made aware of risks linked to her operation for a
prolapse in 2003.
The GMC concluded that the consultant
was not a risk to patients. However the effect the
surgery had on the victims life was relayed in detail at
the hearing. The victim may well be pursuing a
medical
negligence claim against the Trust that employed
Swinhoe at the time.
The individual concerned felt that
she was no longer the same person and her relationship
with her partner had suffered tremendously.
