Smoking age to be increased

  • The legal age limit for smoking is to be increased from 16 to 18.

Campaign groups and anti smoking lobbyists welcomed the governments announcement that the legal age for smoking will increase from the current 16 to 18 from October 2007.

For some observers the changes do not go far enough because unlike purchasing alcohol, it is not a criminal offence to buy cigarettes. There remains a considerable problem with the lack of control over vending machines.
